Not many countries of the world celebrate fathers with their own official day. However, that is what is done in the United States every third Sunday in June. Father’s Day is a special day for dads when they are pampered by their children, given gifts, and even surprised with breakfast in bed!

There are many different stories as to the origins of Father’s Day. Some of the possible scenarios telling the story of the first Father’s Day are:

1. It started in 1908 during a church service in West Virginia.

2. Vancouver, Washington was where the first Father’s Day celebration occurred.

3. Harry Meek, president of the Lions’ Club branch in Chicago, created the first Father’s Day with his organization. It was celebrated in 1915 on the third Sunday of June, since that was a date very close to his birthday.

Even though we don’t know exactly when the first Father’s Day was celebrated, we do know who promoted this holiday with a great passion. Mrs. John B. Dodd, who resided in Spokane Washington, felt that her father was outstanding and deserved to be honored. He had fought in the Civil War and had raised six children on his own after his wife had died.

Mrs. Dodd spoke to her minister and other ministers around Spokane to see if they would have a church service that was solely dedicated to fathers. She wished this service to be held on June 5th, her father’s birthday. It was actually scheduled on June 19th however, since a June 5th date was not long enough for her minister to prepare such a service.

After that, the whole state of Washington began celebrating “Father’s Day” on the third Sunday of June. Children prepared special meals and desserts as a treat for dad. If they happened to live apart, children would make an effort to visit.

Other states and organizations now wanted an annual Father’s Day for the whole country. They began lobbying Congress to declare such a holiday. The idea of a “Father’s Day” was approved by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, but it was not official until President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event in 1924.

Now, we celebrate Father’s Day every third Sunday in June!

The Philippines is a country gifted with great beaches. The better known beaches are those found in Boracay and Palawan. Another beach or resorts worth mentioning are those found on the Mindoro’s northern part in the province of Oriental Mindoro. The place is called Puerto Galera. It is locate south of Manila (130 kilometers south) and 14 nautical miles from Batangas City.

You can go to Puerto Galera from Manila to Batangas using only land routes. When you arrive on Batangas, you would then need to ride a ferry to transport you. The ferry trip will be 1 to 2 hours long.

You have two options to go to Puerto Galera, the cheaper way or the more expensive way. The more expensive way is generally a faster way to get there. The more expensive one will make you ride the MV Super 85 Ferry and Sikat and Bus Services. Riding them is more expensive because they have no stop-overs, board the passengers directly to the ferries and are coasters or vans that are provided by the company.

The cheaper transportation is the way of the commuter buses of BLTB, JAM and TRITRAN which can be located at EDSA-Pasay, Taft Avenue near the corner of Gil Puyat Avenue, and Buendia, respectively. The bus fares will only range from P80 (non-air-conditioned) or P100 (air-conditioned). You will then ride a ferry to go to Puerto Galera and later on would need to hire an outrigger boat that ranges from P2, 000 per banca.

When you arrive at Puerto Galera, there are limitless activities to be done and places to go. You can go to the Hidden Valley, the Mangyan Village, the Muelle Bay and the Tammaraw waterfalls. The activities that can be done in Puerto Galera are kayaking and golfing to name a few.

For people who are fascinated by the marine life Puerto Galera also offers a variety of dive sites. The following dive sites in Puerto Galera are the Coral Garden, The Pink Wall, the Hill, the Hole in the Wall, the Manila Channel, La Laguna Point, the Sabang point and wreck, the dungeon wall, the monkey beach, Ernie’s cave, and many others.

A person who goes to Puerto Galera can also find some nice souvenirs to bring home to. They can be able to get the handicrafts that are made by the Mangyan to bring home to their friends.

There are other interesting places to go to in the Philippines. Don’t simply restrict yourself to the more popular ones. The less popular places can also provide you with a memorable experience.

Our nation is mineral rich indeed we have an incredible amount of raw materials right under our feet. We have natural gas, oil, copper, coal, iron and even uranium just to name a few. We are fortunate to have such natural resources and raw materials to support our industrial might. Wyoming along with Alaska lead the nation for having supported our industrial capacity.

If we look at Wyoming with the city of Gillette above ground coal mining, Oil, natural gas, Kitty Litter, metals and the rest once could only say wow; it is mineral rich indeed. It seems obviously with the incredible ancient volcanic activities and upheaval there it has not only incredible landscapes, but lots of minerals have been thrust to the surface, everything from uranium to soda ash.

http://doe.state.wy.us/lmi/0498/0498a2.htm

Wyoming does a great service to our nation in providing the natural resource to our highly industrialized nation;

http://worldthinktank.net/wttbbs/index.php?s=94b969efd93ead1b6b1c70474a0b4868&showtopic=7

The more we get from our own US Soil the less we have to rely on imported raw materials and their costs to transport and lowering these costs mean we can make the products for less money and compete better in the world markets and export meaning we will help our problematic issues with trade deficit out flows. Wyoming understands this and we are all the better for it. We must celebrate our great states, which have brought the United States to where we are today. Without this service every where you look and everything you see would not have been possible and we should consider this as our nation progresses forward looking back at all we are and all we have built. Think on this.

If you have taken a spa vacation or if you have researched on this topic, you must be aware of the fact that a spa vacation is a very expensive affair. It becomes imperative that you should try to get the best deal on your spa vacation. To get the best deals the first and the foremost requirement turns out to be knowledge and information. Do you know the difference between a destination spa and a resort spa?

A destination spa proves to be expensive and it may cost you anything between $150 and $600 a day per person. The saving grace is that you get free meals and most of the classes and activities provided are also free. In addition to that they may also provide some spa treatments for free. But there is a caveat though. They may decide to charge you a hefty service tax to it and that is why you should get it clarified in the beginning itself.

Contrary to a destination spa, a resort spa can prove to be far cheaper ranging from somewhere between $100 and $200 per day per person. And what is more, you can also get good swimming pools and golf courses with it. But the problem is that you would have to pay for all your meals and all your treatments. You won’t be getting that much exercise classes and if you want to take any extra classes, you would have to pay for that. The price range can be anywhere from $10 to $15 for every extra class. In addition to that you may also find yourself paying for gaining entry to the steam room or the gym. So, the proper course of action would be to find for yourself what all is being offered and what all you have to pay for.

One of the best ways to save money is to travel in off seasons. But you should know which period is considered off season at what place. So, winter is considered off season in the Northeast and summer is considered off season in the Southwest and Florida. Similarly, the rates at the weekends are generally higher as compared to weekly rates. Since, most of the spas allow a minimum of three nights, so you should plan itinerary likewise.

If you have some particular spa to be fitting your requirement, try to find as much as you can about that spa. And the best place to search anything is obviously the internet. It is a good idea to visit their website. That would allow you to understand all the different features that they offer and you may also be able to avail some special discounts that they might be offering. You can also get ample amount of knowledge about the spas present all around the world. A careful research on the web can help you make a perfect decision suiting your specific requirements.

As the field of spa is just warming to competition, you will not find that many special deals in all the spas but some of the better spas are offering frequent spa-er programs ala airlines. That can prove to be beneficial to you if you frequently visit the spa destinations.

Thus, we find that it just needs a little bit of planning to save substantial bucks from your spa travel.

“Why didn’t we do this before?”_______________

Having spoken to so many first time cruisers, their reaction is always the same - they ask themselves “Why didn’t we do this before?” It is great value for money and should be tried at least once. Cruises are much more affordable than they were in the past and many offer better value than the conventional land based holiday as all food and entertainment is included in the price. Prices for a 7 night fly cruise to the Mediterranean can start from as low as £399, however in general prices work out at approximately £100 per day. This price includes flights where required, transfers, accommodation on board, all meals, (be prepared to put on 1lb a day, although a gym on board most ships will help to keep the weight off) entertainment and you get to see a new port each day. Unbeatable value.

__/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/

1st Cruise Holiday Tip

To get the most from your evening meal, choose the second sitting where offered as you will rarely be hurried to finish and you will get more chance to make the most of the social setting.

__/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/

“There is nothing to do on a cruise!”_______________

Are you active and need lots to do? Do you want to totally relax and watch the world go by? Do you want to dress for dinner or do you require a more casual approach? Are you happy to fly and join a ship or do you prefer to cruise out of and back to the UK? We will guide you and point you in the right direction, alternatively you can contact us and one of our experienced cruise consultants will be pleased to help.

It is important to have a good idea of what you want as the range of cruises is enormous. Large vessels in excess of 100,000 tons offer superb family facilities including ice rinks, climbing, basketball and mini golf to name but a few. In the evening following a superb meal in one of the many restaurants on board, the ship really comes to life with casinos, night clubs, cinemas and a full range of entertainment to keep the fun loving active individual happy 24 hours a day.

If this all sounds too much for you and your idea of a cruise means lying back and watching the world go by in total relaxation, then there is plenty of choice to offer. These ships tend to be smaller and although they don’t offer the full range of facilities, they do make up for that in character and tradition. Dinner tends to be of a more formal nature and the range of excursions generally more interesting.

“I thought cruising was only for the well-off”_______________

There is still the old aged perception that cruising is only for the ‘well-off’ and the upper classes. Nothing could be further from the truth! There are now cruises and cruise lines that suit all tastes from 3 star Thomson and Island Cruises through to 6 star Crystal Cruises. There are cruises that cater for families and others that are adult only. There are very traditional cruises where you have formal nights and the gents and ladies dress in dinner suits and cocktail dresses and there are ships that are totally casual and formal nights are the last thing on the agenda.

“I’m afraid I might get sea-sick!”_______________

Most if not all cruise ships have stabilizers, however many cruise ships are so big these days that you don’t even know that you are at sea. In the event of a passenger feeling sea sick there is always a doctor and nurse on board who can give the necessary injection if required or offer sea sickness tablets. Please note that there will be a charge for any treatment from the doctor and therefore adequate travel insurance is a necessity. If you think that there is the possibility of sea sickness it is advisable to contact your own GP before travel.

Generally speaking, cruise ships travel where the weather should be good, however just occasionally the weather patterns can change and there may be an alteration to the cruise ships itinerary. This is very rare but can happen.

“What do I wear?”_______________

There is always that temptation to take clothes for every eventuality, but it is advisable to carefully look at your destination and its climate and pack accordingly. If you are taking a fly/cruise there will be a weight allowance and that allowance will increase the further that you are flying. For Ex UK cruises there is no weight allowance.

On more traditional ships (P&O, Fred.Olsen, Cunard) you can usually expect two formal nights where gentleman wear dinner suits and ladies cocktail dress. Although a suit with tie for gentlemen is acceptable. It is advisable to look at the ships dress code and pack accordingly. Details on this will be sent with your tickets, however if you are in doubt please check with your 1st Cruise Holiday consultant who will be pleased to help.

Above all, don’t be concerned about impressing people or having enough elegant clothes; the whole point of cruising is to make yourself at home, relax and enjoy yourself.

1st Cruise Holiday Tip

It is well worth taking your time to book the cruise that suits you best.

1. Look for the destination that interests you and the itinerary.

2. Look at the cruise line that suits your needs. (Do you have a family or are you just a couple?)

3. Look at the ship and its facilities. Does it offer what you need?

4. Look at the price and that you are not too stretched. Remember on most ships you will have to pay the additional costs of drinks, gratuities and excursions. (Look at our offers page to see if any suit your requirements and pocket)

5. First time cruisers look at our Taster Cruises. 1 to 7 nights in duration.

6. If in doubt call our cruise consultants who will help you choose.

__/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/ __/

After you have booked your 1st Cruise_______________

Once you have booked your cruise and your tickets arrive, they will usually be accompanied by a booklet describing the ship and cruise that you have booked and advising on things like dress codes, gratuities, shore excursions, etc. Do spend some time reading this documentation as you’ll gain valuable advice on what to pack and how much to budget for drinks, gratuities and excursions.

All ships accept credit cards, though you can deposit travelers cheques or cash when you register at the start of a cruise. You’ll then run an account while you’re on board and settle at the end. A final bill will be delivered to you cabin/stateroom on the last night.

For your convenience and if your tips are not pre-payable (your 1st cruise holiday consultant will advise you on this) some ships will distribute envelopes for passengers to fill and dispense on the final night. You are advised to take dollars, sterling or euros depending on the on board currency.

Inside or Out?_______________

Cabins or staterooms as many cruise lines now call them come in many shapes and sizes, but to simplify matters they come in 4 categories. Inside, Outside, Balcony cabins and Suites.

Inside cabins are less expensive than their outside equivalent. There is no natural light, however lighting is good and inside cabins are now designed with drawn curtains to give the impression that there is a window in the cabin. If you do suffer from claustrophobia, you are probably better to choose an outside cabin especially if it is your first cruise. The advantage of an inside cabin is the price and you do sleep well with no natural light to wake you in the morning. The disadvantage is no natural light and you are unable to view the weather. Therefore a scouting mission is required to get your weather report. Many past passengers book an inside cabin to keep costs down and as you spend little time in your cabin apart from sleeping and a quick change for dinner they do not feel the need to spend needlessly.

Most cabins come equipped with TV, Phone, Safe and private facilities in the way of bath or shower.

Outside cabins will either have a porthole or picture window depending on ship and/or position on ship.

As you move up the cabin/stateroom scale, they become larger and better positioned on the ship. Mid ship cabins are generally more expensive than those at the front or rear of the ship. The facilities will increase and provide greater wardrobe space. Balcony cabins are now becoming much more popular and ships are providing more and more of these cabins.

Suites have a lot more facilities and many include canapés being sent to your suite each night before dinner together with a glass of Champagne. Some of the larger suites include your very own butler and pianist, however, these do come at a price.

Did you hear that they are moving the date of Christmas this year?

No, not really.

But we do seem to act as if it is a different date each year.

I guess there are those among us that enjoy the pressure shopping of the day before Christmas. To me it’s one definition of hell on earth, along with standing in line at a theme park in August.

Same time every year

Have you ever noticed that Christmas and other major events around the holidays are at the same time every year?

I first noticed this and what it meant when I was married and we found ourselves at the mall years ago, looking for a place to park. It occurred to us both that this was really silly since it came at the same expected time each year.

If it is at the same expected time each year, does that not imply that we could perhaps plan for it?

Here are a few suggestions on how to get ready

Since stores are open year round, you could shop year round. When you see something that someone on your yearly list would like, get it then and save it for the big day.

Refuse to wait until the last minute on anything.

Begin early to get ready and do a little bit at a time.

Set goals to have things accomplished way before the last possible minute. In this way, you do not have to scramble around making yourself and those around you crazy.

Enjoy and celebrate.

For years the most prominent public role for Peter Sutherland as chairman of BP PLC was to play host at the company’s yearly meeting. But after a string of oil spills, deadly accidents and an energy-trading scandal at BP, the 60-year-old one-time rugby player has rushed into the scrum.

Last year, the Irish politician and banker forced Chief Executive John Browne to publicly commit to his retirement date. After Lord Browne’s unanticipated decision last month to depart a year and a half earlier than planned, Mr. Sutherland must now bolster BP’s image and manage the company’s first executive-suite transition in more than ten years.

Despite oil prices dramatically increasing its shares rose only 4.5 per cent in 2006, compared with a 36 per cent rise by Exxon Mobil Corp. and 15 per cent at Royal Dutch Shell PLC. Yesterday, the company announced fourth-quarter net income fell 22 per cent, in part reflecting lower production and lower natural-gas prices.

BP, in the mean time, faces U.S. criminal probes on three fronts — oil spills and corrosion in Alaska; a a refinery explosion in March 2005 which claimed the lives of 15 in Texas; as well as its energy-trading practices, with federal officials alleging BP traders surreptitiously influenced propane markets in 2004. BP refutes this claim and says it is cooperating with investigators on all three inquiries.

Mr. Sutherland’s prominent public standing also underscores a pattern that goes beyond BP: a transition in the boardroom dynamics at many of Europe’s biggest publicly traded companies. Nonexecutive directors here have in the past been criticized for leaving too much decision-making in the hands of powerful executives. Now, many firms are moving to shore up their boards with independent and strong directors.

Up until Shell were shaken by an accounting scandal in 2004, Shell’s British holding company had as its chairman a professor of geology. After the controversy, it recruited Jorma Ollila, former chief executive officer of Nokia Corp as chairman. Unilever also appointed an outside chairman last month to cap a restructuring at the Anglo-Dutch consumer-goods giant.

The goal of Mr. Sutherland at BP from the beginning has always been to focus on establishing a “robust” and independent board of directors he was quoted as saying in a recent interview. After stints as Ireland’s attorney general and Europe’s competition czar, Peter Sutherland in 1993 was instrumental in taking forward the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in Geneva. There, he clinched the Uruguay Round, an important trade agreement that set the foundations for today’s World Trade Organization. For a man who has achieved so much it is difficult to forsee where he will find his next challenge.
