Superb Snow All over the Alps

We have had about two metres snowfall during the week. The snow was so deep that skiing lifts have been closed, the funicular has been stopped at Chamonix ski resort and not going up to Le Tour. Some roads were shut and snow announcements released.

This is in direct contrast to two winter seasons past, when we experienced the incredibly hot January conditions, mud appearing on the mountain, and warnings that global warming meant the conclusion of skiing in the Alps. Indeed the OECD’s report from winter 2006 admonished that climate change would make ski holidays far too dear for a lot of holiday makers, with a third of skiing resorts going bust and the receding of alpine glaciers. Climatologists insist that it’s virtually impossible to attribute the seasonal variations in the weather to the off shoots of climate change.

So we may be experiencing the deepest downturn in nearly 25 years, and the Sterling has headed to new lows against the Euro, but the skiing is fine, and the latest bookings prove that skiers are eager to enjoy the grand snow conditions. It is certainly the finest in six seasons, and many are stating that it is the finest skiing snow in at least 10 years.

Nonetheless think that lots of snow like this means large avalanches risks.
